Teeth whitening is a procedure designed to lighten the color of your teeth. When done properly, whitening will not harm your teeth or gums. Significant lightening can be achieved in the vast majority of cases, but the results cannot be guaranteed. Teeth whitening, like all other dental procedures, has limitations. These limitations have to do primarily with the types of discoloration that affect the teeth, the degree to which patients follow instructions, and the overall condition of the teeth. All of these factors affect the outcome of treatment.
However, people with yellow or yellow-brown stains tend to whiten better than those with gray or bluish-grey teeth. Multi-colored teeth, especially if stained with tetracycline, are very difficult to whiten. However, modern teeth whitening can produce significant results.
Types of teeth whitening:
This in-office procedure is usually completed in one appointment, although it may require multiple appointments depending on how your teeth respond and your expectations. We isolate the teeth with a protective shield, then apply a strong teeth-whitening solution. A special light activates the solution. You can relax, listen to music, or watch a movie while we whiten your teeth in about an hour. This procedure is less predictable than home or Deep Bleaching™ procedures. In addition, some patients experience mild sensitivity for one or two days
If you decide on in-office teeth whitening without the bleaching light system, Dr. Mills will apply a potent gel to your teeth to lighten or remove stains. You will leave with a dazzling smile after just one visit. We can apply professional-strength bleaching gel that you can’t get over the counter. For patients worried about sensitivity, this system provides a good alternative to Power Whitening.
Deep Bleaching developed by Dr Rod Kurthy incorporates in-office and home bleaching. This system yields optimal, lasting results. The Deep Bleaching solution we order from Dr. Kurthy is shipped to us on ice. It is highly effective at reducing or eliminating many types of tooth enamel stains.
